Movie Response

I found the way movie industries fought with the peak of TV was interesting. Their tactics were clever. Movies used gimmicks and elaborate sets to outdo the TV industry. TV couldn't afford to use all of these things. There's also a lot things people can experience in movie theaters that they can't at home. There were sensory and cultural experiences. Most people don't go to the theater without other people. There's also a big screen with big speakers. It's very overwhelming.

Radios Response

Radio was important because it was the first live news medium. I thought it was cool how people knew about the Hindenburg Crash right as it happened. It was also very portable and it created relationships with the audiences. I also found that how it shaped teenagers with rock and roll was interesting. It created an age of adolescents. Instead of going from a kid to an adult there was something in between. If a band was played on the radio, then they were considered successful. I found this interesting because it's still kind of true to this day. I found it interesting that radio declined very fast after the invention of TV. I, personally listen to the radio more than I watch TV.

WAVE Critique

On October 17, 2013, the lead story for WAVE3 was about Chane Behanan indefinitely suspended from U of L men’s basketball team. Chane being suspended has an impact on Louisville’s team because he can no longer play until December. Chane was one of the players that helped Louisville’s team win the NCAA tournament. Many Louisville fans are fired up about his suspension. I, personally don’t pay attention to basketball that’s why it didn’t relate to me. The story took up most of the news show and the reporters kept bringing it up. This affected our team, but I’m sure the basketball team will recover. This story needed to be a quarter of its time because I felt like I was watching ESPN. WAVE you need to leave it to the sports reporters to cover these stories.

WAVE Critique

On October 17, 2013, one of the stories for WAVE3 was about a train derailment in October of 2012. The story focused on the train, but also wanted to send the message that they needed to be more prepared for accidents. They focused on the derailment of the train, but talked about Hurricane Sandy a little. These events happened last year. Although I find these events tragic and important I think they should’ve used more recent accidents. There have been a lot more accidents since then until now. The story was very long and didn’t deserve to have a lot of air time.

WAVE Critque

My news channel is WAVE3. I don’t watch the news regularly, but since this project I am. I find it interesting because they take a different approach than newspapers. It gives you a visual. They don’t have to tell you as many details because they can show you a photo or footage of the event.  The lead story for October 2, 2013, was about Jessica Dishon’s uncle being indicted for her murder. This case is 20 years old and it was not relevant to most people. Many people have probably forgotten by now. I, personally didn’t even know this case was going on until watching this news show. WAVE3 blew this story out of proportion. Besides the lead story WAVE did a good job reporting news stories. There were a total of 13 news stories.

Radio Response

Radio affected society and the “rules” of life, which I didn’t know. At my age people would already be working and starting a family. Radio started the age of teen hood. Radio was such a big thing back then. Radio helped people become successful. If you were played on the radio you were considered successful. It’s very hard to be a successful in the music industry now. It takes perseverance. I thought that the period when rock and roll was really big was interesting. Rock and roll contributed to the start of teenagers. Radio also was the start of conglomeration. If radio never existed, then modern day would be very different.

Merchants of Cool

I am interested in advertising, so I found the documentary “Merchants of Cool” interesting. I learned a lot about propaganda and advertising in middle school, so I could add more to my knowledge about advertising. I thought that teens were portrayed in an unfair way in marketing. I think that the marketers give a bad image of teens. Some adults don’t like teens because of one event or commercials. I think that marketers are only watching a certain group then reflecting off of them. I agree with the part when they said that media sends a message, then teens copy, and then media sells that. I think that media portrays a certain rebellious group of teens, then teens want to be like that, and then that’s what marketers think teens are like, so they continue. Manu people have insecurities these days and I think that’s the media’s fault because they are selling a false image. I don’t think that people are being true to themselves because they want to fit in with the “cool” kids. I think that media and marketers have divided society a little.
